Xin Hua Hospital affiliated to Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine was founded in 1958. With more than 50 year’s efforts of all the medical workers at Xin Hua to make it prosperous, the hospital has become a modern comprehensive teaching institution with a complete installation of disciplines, special features and integrated with medical treatment, education and scientific researches. The hospital has been awarded the title of “National Advanced Unit in Health System” and Class A Unit of Shanghai Budget Credit, eight times the title of “Shanghai Civilized Unit”, four times the title of “National Advanced Collectivity”, two times the titles of “National Advanced Unit in Hospital Cultural Construction”. In recent years, it was awarded the honors of “National Group for counterpart Support Work between Urban and Rural Hospitals” and “Shanghai Model Study Unit”, both are the only granted titles won in Shanghai health system.

The hospital has an area of more than 7.5 hectares with a building acreage of 192,000 square meters. The hospital offers a beautiful and comfortable environment to patients with such first class medical facilities as emergency building, outpatient and internal medicine building, Gynecology/Obstetrics and pediatric building, stomatology and dermatology building, and medical technology building.  The newly-built emergency building, surgical building, healthcare building, science and education building, as well as the pediatric surgical building to be completed, the pediatric complex building to be built, will further enhance the overall comprehensive strength of the hospital while keeping and developing the traditional advantages of pediatrics.  The restructuring and development strategy featuring multidisciplinary proves to be effective.

The hospital has a complete installation of disciplines with more than 2000 medical beds.  It accommodates WHO Collaborative Centre for Child Growth and Development, Neonatal Screening and Genetic Metabolic Diseases Department of China Medical Genetics Center, MOH Treatment Center for Children with Lithiasis, Shanghai Critical Maternal Consulting and Rescue Center, Shanghai Critical Newborn Consulting and Rescue Center, Shanghai Prenatal Diagnosis Center and Shanghai Diagnosis and Treatment Center for Hearing Disorders.  Initiated by the hospital, seven Diagnosis and Treatment Centers for Special Disease of Shanghai Jiao Tong University were founded.  The hospital also set up eight Technological Platforms for Medical Service.  Various operational indicators show positive development trend. The number of outpatient and emergency visits stands at more than 3.6 million, perennially ranking the first among Shanghai Tertiary General hospitals.  The number of discharged inpatients is 80,000 and the surgical cases 46000.

Xin Hua Hospital has a total staff of over 3300.  The Hospital is proud to have a phalanx of high-level personnel, including principal scientist of 973 project, Cheung Kong Scholar, scholars of national and Shanghai “Thousand Talent Plan”, Shanghai Outstanding Academic Leader, etc.  Over 20 experts were elected as chair or vice-chair of the national and local professional societies.  A number of outstanding academic leaders have driven the return of overseas talents.  A gratifying situation has taken shape in which talents and experts gather together.

The hospital boasts a number of research institutions, including MOE and Shanghai Key Laboratory of Children’s Environmental Health, Shanghai Institute for Pediatric Research, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Child Digestion and Nutrition, the Institute of Hospital Strategic Management of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Ear Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine and Biliary Diseases Institute of Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine, etc. The hospital boasts eight National Clinical Key Specialties, including Clinical Laboratory, Pharmacy, Otolaryngology Head & Neck Surgery, Cardiac Vascular Surgery, Pediatric Respiratory, General Surgery, Dermatology and TCM.  The departments of Pediatrics, Child and adolescent Healthcare, Clinical Nutrition, Cardiology and Orthopedics are the key disciplines or sub-disciplines set respectively by the state and Shanghai Public Health Program. The hospital also has one Shanghai Top-priority Clinical Medical Center, one Clinical Key Discipline, one Key Cultivating Discipline, and two Top Disciplines of Shanghai Colleges and Universities.  The “Journal of Clinical Pediatrics”, an academic periodical of pediatrics, edited by the hospital and Shanghai Institute for Pediatric Research has been embodied as a data-bank. In 2013, the “Journal of  Biology Education”, the first academic scientific journal in the field of biology education in China, started publication, which bridges the communication between biomedicine and education and helps to establish a new mode of combining medicine and education.

Following the strategy of "integrated research", a great number of researchers work assiduously and study concentratedly, yielding fruitful results in basic and clinical research. Over the past five years, the hospital has won two National Science & Technology Progress Awards, 14 Science & Technology Progress Awards at Provincial/Ministerial above; obtained over 700 research programs, among which 400 plus are at Provincial/Ministerial level or above. More than 400 SCI paper have been published.

The hospital implements “integrated education platform” and “three combinations” to build a systematic, scientific, and standardized teaching management system, The “three combination” refers to the combination of Xin Hua School of Clinical Medicine, Faculty of Clinical Nutrition, Faculty of Pediatrics, and Faculty of Otolaryngology; the combination of undergraduate education and postgraduate education; and the combination of academic education and job training.  The hospital now has 58 tutors for the training of doctor degree students, 114 tutors for the training of master degree students, mobile post-doctorate stations, 12 doctor degree programs and 19 master degree programs.

To achieve the purpose of "serving the patients and making them satisfied with Xinhua", the hospital established a patient service center in 2008, which is the first of its kind in Shanghai.  Outpatient and emergency management mode was innovated, service process was reengineered, "integrated management” and "one-stop" service model was set up consisting of window service, outpatient and emergency treatment and complaint reception. This move truly realized the transformation from "convenient for management" to "convenient for patients" and got promotion in the city health system.  In 2013, “Xin Hua medical service and advisory hotline” opened, which is the first 7*24 one-stop medical services and advisory telephone platform in Shanghai.  This platform made integration and promotion of the original patient hotline and switchboard program-controlled telephone platform, which further improved the efficiency and quality of a series of medical service and advisory work, including telephone appointment and return call of pre-registered patients.

The informatization level of Xinhua Hospital has been holding a leading position in the country. Great importance are attached to the construction of management informatization with HRP as the core, clinical informationation with electronic medical records as the core, and Xinhua (Chongming) regional health service informationzation with electronic resident health record as the core.  Many innovative management and technology exploration has been in front rank in China, such as comprehensive appointment, electronic medical records, data exchange platform, virtual technology, computer room construction, information service management mode (based on ITIL), etc.  Nowadays, the hospital puts forward higher requests in regards with informationzation, which features “management driven by information” to strengthen deep fusion of each link of hospital through information system and to promote refinement of work division and medical quality control, so as to realize the target of "digital intelligent hospital".

Patients are provided with high quality services by various advanced medical equipment, including PET-CT, DSCT, SPECT/CT, ICT, 2 MRI, 4 spiral CT, 4 sets of digital subtraction angiography, 2 linear accelerator, ECT, high-pressure (low pressure) oxygen therapy chamber, automatic biochemical analyzer, flow cytometry, automatic protein analyzer and other large equipment and a variety of testing, monitoring, imaging diagnostic facilities, which ensue the high quality of diagnosis and treatment.

Founded in 2005, Xin Hua Hospital Group is composed of Xin Hua Hospital, Shanghai Children’s Medical Center, Shanghai No.3 People’s Hospital, Xin Hua Hospital (Chongming) and Chongming No.2 People’s Hospital. With management and technology as the link, the members of the Group have established a loose partnership bounded by legal contract or agreement, carrying out cooperation in the best interests of the Group and all members in the fields of hospital management, brand building, research, personnel training, so as to achieve complementary advantages and cooperative symbiosis.

Since 1970s, the hospital has established collaborative programs and academic exchange with more than 20 overseas hospitals and institutions, including University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, University of Wisconsin School of Medicine, McMaster University, Canada, and Henri Mondor Hospital of Paris, France, etc. With the support of US based Project HOPE, the hospital has built up Shanghai Children’s Medical Center. The variety of increasing international exchanges have not only given a great impetus to the rapid development of the hospital but also brought forth to the world a good image.

Tibet-aiding Medical Work: the hospital sent high-quality cadres with comprehensive ability in profession and management to Tibet, who served as vice president and member of party committee in Shigatse People's Hospital.  A large-scale oxygen plant and a hyperbaric chamber were completed, filling in a gap in the region and winning high appreciation from local government and front headquarter.

Xinjiang-aiding Medical Work: the hospital dispatched management and clinical experts to Xinjiang, taking the responsibility for overall coordination of “Key Discipline Construction Project" of Kashgar No. 2 Hospital.  The first newborn hearing screening program was launched in South Xinjiang.

Yunnan-aiding Medical Work: The first round of three-year counterpart support mission for Yunnan was successfully completed. The second round has been carried out with persistent efforts in order to leave a medical team which can never be brought away for Longling People’s Hospital.

Chongming-aiding Medical Work: In accordance with the overall deployment of "5 +3 +1" project in Shanghai medical and health system reform, the hospital takes full responsibility for upgrading Chongming Hospital to tertiary level.  Discipline development, connotation quality and hardware construction have been significantly improved.  Chongming Hospital successfully passed the tertiary level assessment by Shanghai grade and evaluation center. The local people in Chongming with severe illness no longer need to seek medical treatment outside the island.

In 2012, the hospital won the honor of “National Group for counterpart Support Work between Urban and Rural Hospitals” by MOH. It is the only general hospital in Shanghai to have won this honorary title.

The hospital actively builds a harmonious hospital, deepens the construction of cultural connotation and pursuits innovation of cultural construction.  Efforts are made to build four hospital cultural brands, including "Annual Awards Selection, Xin Hua TV, Xinhua Grand Lecture and Xinhua Spring Festival Gala". A series of fantastic and popular activities are launched, which effectively support the construction and development of hospital cultural.  In 2012, the hospital won the title of “the 4th National Advanced Unit for Hospital (Health) Cultural Construction”.
